Workwear Lookbook

Saturday, 28 February 2015

Sometimes I get an idea for a blogpost that sounds cool in my head but then the execution is nothing like I pictured.  This is one of those occasions.  I had these grand plans for a Workwear Lookbook where I'd spend a Saturday afternoon taking outfit photos and then do a snazzy bit of editing and have the shopping details for each item overlaid on the image, sounds fairly easy eh….well, no.

I've been so bogged down with wedding planning recently that the rare Saturday afternoon I am free the last thing I want to do is spend hours taking outfit pictures in my bedroom (this last OOTD post took me about 45 minutes and that was ONE outfit!).  So what we have instead is a week of outfit photos taken on my iPhone in the mirror 5 minutes before I left the house in the morning.  Not quite what I imagined, but at least it's authentic, ha!

jumper* - jd williams
skirt - new look
boots - dorothy perkins (old)
necklace - new look (old)

You can tell it's a Monday morning as these are by far the worst photos of the week.  I mean, what even is the angle of that second photo?!  I'm also not sure that the necklace really goes with the outfit, but never mind, you can't win them all.

dress - primark
necklace - new look (old)
boots - new look

Fun fact - I wear this dress every. single. Tuesday.  The reason being it's Slimming World weigh in day and I like to wear the same thing so I can be sure any weight loss/gain is accurate.  I love this dress though so I'm quite happy to wear it every week.  It's funny, a few years ago I despised tartan and you'd never catch me in a tartan dress but now I love it - in fact I wore it to a meeting in Paris last month (with my tartan scarf too), totally repping the Scottish look.

jumper* - jd williams
necklace - primark
boots - new look

This top has become a surprise favourite in my wardrobe - I think I've worn it about 6 times in the last month.  I don't even know why I love it so much, it's just a basic shirt/jumper combo but it's that perfect balance between smart and casual.  I teamed it with my new favourite brooch, this Parks & Rec beauty that B got me for Christmas.  Ron Swanson I love you.

dress - primark
cardigan* - jd williams
necklace - dorothy perkins (old)
boots - dorothy perkins (old)

My best Wednesday Addams look.  This is my go-to meeting dress, pretty much every client meeting I attend I wear it as it's nice and smart.  In fact when I was in Paris last month I wore it to a meeting and it turned out my client has the exact same dress - who even knew Paris had a Primark?

I've thrown over my new favourite cardigan which I was kindly sent from JD Williams.  They asked me to pick a couple of knitwear items and since I was in desperate need of a new basic cardigan I made a beeline for this one - it's a lovely slouchy fit that is ideal for throwing over an outfit.  I was really impressed with their range actually, it took me ages to narrow down by choices as I had my eye on a couple of other jumpers (like this one!), so I might go back and buy them soon.

top - h&m (old)
necklace - topshop (old)
boots - new look

This top featured in my last shopping post as it caught my eye whilst browsing H&M during the Christmas holidays.  The peplum shape is surprisingly flattering for a curvy figure, I thought it would just make my middle look bigger but it actually cinches me in at the waist quite nicely.  I went out for dinner with friends after work on Friday, so I wore my black cardigan whilst in the office and then took it off and added a bright lipstick to dress me up and head out.

So there's my week! I think Wednesday was my favourite outfit, there's something about that top that I'm just obsessed with for some reason.  What about you, which is your fave?  Also, are the mirror shots really annoying or does it still do the job?  Be honest!

You Go Glen Coco #4

Sunday, 22 February 2015
Long time readers of my blog might recognise this series from waaaay back in 2012/13.  It was basically a place for me to share blog posts that I'd recently enjoyed and to spread a bit of the blogger love.

I'll be honest and say that in the last 6 months or so the only blogs I've read are those of my close friends, or interesting sounding posts that I've found on Twitter.  I'm trying to get back to the good old days though where I used to spend my Sunday mornings reading and commenting on blogs and feeling properly part of the blogging community.  I feel like I get so much more enjoyment from writing my own blog if I'm also engaging with other bloggers, so I definitely want to keep it up.

In a bid to do just that I've decided to revive my You Go Glen Coco series so I can share with you great posts and blogs that I've been enjoying recently.  I encourage you to share the love too - if you've read something recently that made me smile or laugh or cry then share it!  Blogging can be a bit of an egotistical pastime and sometimes when I nose in on the various hashtag blogger chats on Twitter it feels a bit like everyone is just desperately trying to advertise their own blog rather than engage with each other.  One of the best things about blogging for me is getting to meet people with similar interests.  I've made some amazing friends in the blogging community, people who I'd have never met if we hadn't decided one day to set up a blog.

Funnily enough actually, in the last YGGC post I wrote (back in Feb 2013) one of the blogs I highlighted was Indigo Buttons - after that Kirsty and I started chatting on Twitter,  a few months later we met at a blogger event, and then one thing lead to another (not that) and now she's one of my best friends.  A prime example of what you can get out of the blogging community if you share a bit of the love.

As I'm in the midst of wedding planning I've been reading quite a few wedding blogs recently, Rock My Wedding being one of my faves for real life wedding inspiration.  How adorable is Caroline & Rob's rustic pastel themed wedding?!

I adore Donna's outfit here - the dress, the bag, the fresh flowers - ahh just so cute!

I'm off to Disneyland Paris for my mini hen do/30th birthday celebrations in just a few weeks time and Lily's post and vlog have got me proper excited for my own Disney adventure!

I love Hannah's funny, open and honest writing style and this post is a perfect example.

I'm loving Katherine's Copenhagen posts, they bring back lovely memories of my own trip last year (where I got engaged) and make me want to go back!

….and none for you Gretchen Weiners!

Treat Yo Self: Valentines Edition

Wednesday, 18 February 2015
I hope you all had a lovely Valentines Day at the weekend, whether you spent it with your partner, friends, family, or just your best pal Netflix.  Blair and I never do anything special as neither of us really see it as a big deal, so for the most part it was just a regular weekend.  I did use the fact it was Valentines Day as a bit of an excuse to treat myself though - calories and pampering galore!

First of all, I treated myself to a visit to the hair salon.  Nothing too dramatic, just a refresh of my highlights and a wee trim.  I still felt pretty swish though - my hair is so bouncy!

I'm the chef in our house so to give me a day off we got an M&S 2 Dine in for £20 deal.  It was total indulgence with fried cheese to start followed by pie and chips and then profiteroles.  Oh and chocolate for afters.  Forgive me Slimming World, for I have SYNed.

A lovely gift from B…..

…..and a lovely gift from me!  This was one of the best comedy shows to come out of the BBC in the last 5 years.  Soooo good.  Here's a taster of the weirdness.

Being big fans of Parks & Recreation (as if you couldn't tell from the title of this post), B also treated me (hehe) to this mug.

I love a Sunday afternoon pamper sesh, spending an hour in the bathroom using hair treatments, exfoliating, and slathering myself in body butter. With the Taylor Swift album playing in the background of course.  #LoveYaTay-Tay

Speaking of my pal Swifty, I also spent an abnormal amount of time watching and rewatching her new video for Style.  Just look at that bloody beautiful face.  She's got that red lip classic thing that I like.

Thanks so much to Mira Showers for sending me a pamper box to help me treat myself this weekend, including a 360 shower head (how did you know my shower head has been leaking for months and needed replaced…..have you got my bathroom bugged?).  I am obsessed with the novelty of the 360 feature - the first time I used it I actually shouted "BLAIR, COME LOOK AT THIS, IT TURNS INSIDE OUT!".  The only downside is I want to have really long showers now, especially since I'm no longer being sprayed in the face by an out of control leaking shower head.  Sorry B, that bathroom is mine.

No7 Instant Radiance Foundation - buy here
I feel like for the last 4 years or so I've been on a constant search for the perfect foundation.  I couldn't even tell you how many different products I've tried, although I do currently have 6 different half empty bottles in my collection.  Up until recently I'd kind of given up on high street / drugstore foundations as I hadn't found one that I felt was as good as the more expensive brands (my favourites being Chanel Vitalumiere and Origins Plantscription), buuuuuut that was until I discovered the No7 Instant Radiance Foundation.

It it without a doubt the BEST foundation I have tried in the last few years - high street or otherwise.  It has a fairly light but buildable coverage, with a beautiful radiant finish that makes my skin look amaaaaazing.  When I met up with my pal Kirsty recently she said "whatever make up you are wearing, you need to wear it all the time because your skin looks unbelievable".  So I took her advice and it pretty much hasn't been off my face since, I'm even on to my second bottle which is almost unheard of for me.

The staying power is also really impressive - normally by the end of the day my foundation has slipped off or sunk into my pores, but not this - yeah it doesn't look as "done" as it was when I left in the morning, but I don't feel the need to top up if I'm going out for dinner after work like I used to.  I also think the staying power is in part due to the help of my next favourite…..

No7 Stay Perfect Primer - buy here
When I went to repurchase the No7 foundation above they had an offer on (buy one get the other half price)  so I ended up buying their Stay Perfect Primer too as my Clarins Instant Smooth was about to run out.

I love the texture of this, it reminds me of the Hourglass Mineral Veil primer which I tried a couple of years ago (I really liked it, but couldn't justify the high cost) - a smooth formula with a thinner consistency than the Clarins one.  It's oil free but contains silica so if your skin doesn't like silicons then it may not be for you (I've had no problems).

I love how my skin feels after I've applied this, so smooth and matte with evened out pores.  It's the perfect partner to the radiance foundation, and I can't see myself switching up my routine any time soon.  If you want to see them "in action" then check out my latest  Get Ready With Me video.

Indeed Labs Hydraluron Moisture Jelly - buy here
A new addition to my night-time skincare routine is the Hydraluron Moisture Jelly - again, purchased because it was on offer.  As the name suggests, it has a jelly like texture so it feels lovely and cooling on the skin.  The directions for use say you should apply morning and evening but I tend to just use it at night because it needs a little bit more time to sink it than my usual moisturiser (Origins Make a Difference+).  I say a little bit more time, but I mean it takes like 10 minutes which isn't bad at all but I am waaaay too impatient.

In the morning my skin feels like it's had a proper treat - all soft and supple like I've had a facial.  I highly recommend it!

The pot has the added novelty of a push-pop style dispenser function which I get way too much joy from.  If you watched my last haul video you'll have seen me discover this with some excitement.

Soap & Glory Archery - buy here
I put this on my wishlist after seeing few beauty youtubers use it in tutorials, so I was super excited when I unwrapped it on Christmas morning (thanks B!).  To put it bluntly, this product has completely transformed my brows.  I love both ends and tend to just go with whichever one I happen to open in the morning.  They both give a really precise finish - the thin brush/pen is great for filling in gaps and the waxy pencil is great for shaping.  Love it!

For ref, I've got the shade Love is Blonde.

Bond No9 Central Park West Perfume
A couple of years ago I used to get a monthly Glossybox subscription and I got a sample of this perfume and completely fell in love with it.  I remember looking it up online to try buy the full bottle and was horrified to discover that it cost in the region of £300.  How gutting?!  There was no way I could justify spending that on a perfume so I resorted to just trying to make the tiny sample last as long as possible.

Once it ran out I just threw the vial in the bin and forgot all about it until very recently when I decided I wanted to buy a new perfume and whilst trying to think of ones I'd sampled in the past I suddenly remembered my much loved Bond No9 sample.  As it was now about 3 years old the cost had gone waaay down and I was able to find it for just under £100 on a couple of perfume websites.  I still felt like that was a bit much for a perfume though (especially since I'm currently saving for a wedding and am trying to curb frivolous spending) so decided that I would do some ebay selling to make the money (a bit like when you're little and you have to save up pocket money for something).

8 dresses later and I had just over £100 in my Paypal account so was ready to treat myself to my dream perfume. The minute it arrived at work I actually took it out and sprayed it on my wrists and did a totally cliched "ahhhhhh" sigh at just how beautiful it smelt.  I'm rubbish at describing scents but it's very floral and quite "grown up" if you know what I mean, like it smells like the perfume fitting for a 30 year old, more so than some of the more sweet smelling perfumes I have in my collection.

Btw the website I bought it from for £99 no longer has it in stock and everywhere else is £140 plus so that's why I've not bothered with a "buy me" link above.

So that's my current favourite makeup and beauty products - I am literally using all of these on a daily basis at the moment, especially the foundation and primer.  I'd love to know if you've tried any of these too?

I thought it was about time I brought back my old diaries feature, and as it's Valentines Day next week I've gone with a relationships theme.  Not difficult since about 75% of my diary entries are about my love life, or lack thereof.  Seriously, based on my scribblings it would appear that my entire life in my teens/early 20's was defined by how much attention was being paid to me by the opposite sex.  I bow my feminist head in shame.

Oh well, at least it makes for some amusing blog content!

Saturday May 17th 2003

Hey ho,

Well I'm back to where I started!  Gordon stopped texting me and I didn't hear from him for nearly a month. His brother told me he had a date with a girl called Britney (!) so I figured he'd just found someone better. But, he sent me an email last night saying he was really sorry, he's pissed off with him brother (as he's not even kissed Britney and she's definitely not his girlfriend) and he hasn't got the time or the money for a girlfriend at the moment.  Oh, and the reason he hadn't texted me was because he has no credit, and he is totally broke. I told him not to worry, I'm not looking for a boyfriend, just having fun while I"m young! I hope we stay mates tho cos we used to have good convos on MSN and he's totally fab.

He also said he hasn't had a girlfriend in 3 YEARS! Why?! Are the rest of the females in Edinburgh BLIND AND/OR STUPID?! Or maybe its cos he likes girls he can hold a conversation with, and who isn't stuck up her own ass. Which is why, as he once said, I am the only girl he's met in the last year who he could see as his girlfriend. Aww I want him - maybe I should offer him 'no strings attached sex', haha.  Nah, I'll get a name for myself (as the perfect girl?!).

Oh you are just the absolute WORST.

Sometime in 2001 - "cos I am like, in love with him"

Friday 6th September 2004

Dear diary,

Well, first of all Ryan is out of the picture. For some reason unknown to me he just stopped texting me and then gave me some 'excuse' about him getting attacked and I haven't heard from since. What's the deal with that? I don't think I did anything wrong, it's like he just suddenly decided he didn't like me - git. I'm deleting his number from my phone at this precise moment - erasing him from my life. And I'll take down him pictures from my Malia wall - closure!

Hey, maybe he actually WAS attacked and you're just being a total bitch?

Secondly, still no word from Gordon. I really really need to give up on that one but I can't!

It literally took another 3 years to finally give up

Still not seen Brett to give him 'the speech', will either have the effect of him kissing me (hopefully) or breaking my heart (likely).

Hahahah I'd forgotten about this - 'the speech' was basically me telling this guy that I fancied him, but I'd practiced the lines so much that it was like something from an episode of Dawsons Creek.  Luckily I never did end up doing it.

I also haven't met up with Paul yet, but I do fully intend to, and now that we know he is mates with Grant (who Anna fancies) it creates opportunities to meet him.

Oh and I also heard recently that George has a new girlfriend - hmm good for him.  Lee told me, incidentally I almost pulled Lee but then instead we just 'slept' together, it was quite nice actually….but no, I'm not allowed to like him!!

And lastly, I'm sort of going out with Scott - Gillian's ex. The only thing is that he likes me TOO much - in a stalker kind of way - and it's getting irritating. But it's nice to feel wanted I guess.

Oh also, it's been a month since I last pulled - what's the deal with that??!

This might be my last delve into my old diaries on here, I think I've extracted all of the stuff that lies between being too boring and far too embarrassing.  You may be thinking that the above is embarrassing enough, but ohhhhhhh no my friend, there is much MUCH worse.  I just can't bring myself to put those online and reveal just how unbelievably pathetic I really was.  One day maybe….
