Holiday Diary: Day 1

Sunday, 29 September 2013
Helloooo!  So I'm trying to slowly ease myself back into blogging after a couple of weeks break (I realise that sounds ridiculous, but I'm definitely finding it harder to sit down and write after not doing it for a while, it's like when you used to come back from the summer holidays at school and suddenly would be like "emm how do I write with a pencil again?!").

I'm going to start off with a couple of holiday blog posts as 1) I enjoy reading these on blogs, 2) I have a ton of pictures that I might as well get some use out of and 3) well I'm quite lazy and this is a fairly easy type of post to write :)

To avoid ending up with one MASSIVE post that no one in their right mind is going to actually bother reading, I'm going to do 6 separate posts, one for each day of the holiday, with a summary of what we got up to (which should hopefully give you some tips/ideas for things to do in these cities if you're planning a visit) along with lots of photographs.

To kick off here's Day 1 in Berlin.

So our flight landed in Berlin around 1.30pm and our first stop was to go validate our travel passes that I'd bought us online (from here) to save us worrying about buying single or day tickets every time we wanted to jump on the underground or a bus etc.  They have little validating machines on every platform, you just stick your ticket in and voila it prints todays' date and you're good to go.  Two train/underground journeys and a short 2 minute walk later and we had arrived at our hotel - Gat Point Charlie.

To our excitement, we were upgraded to a suite at check-in so we ended up with a room on the top floor with a super kingsize bed, a separate living area and a balcony - so swish!  After unpacking (I'm not one of those people who is happy to live out of a suitcase on holiday - I like to put everything away in its proper place before I can relax) we headed out and jumped on the underground along to the Brandenburg Gate.  This used to be the gateway to the city, and is one of the main tourist / photo spots in Berlin.

Round the corner from this was the Reichstag which is the home of the German parliament.  You can go inside this and walk up to the top of the glass dome to see a view of the city but it was quite late by the time we got there (4/5ish) so we didn't bother.

After popping into a gift shop to pick up something suitably tacky for a memento (a bit of the Berlin Wall) we walked over to the Holocaust Memorial.  This is really striking looking with grey blocks of varying heights, and as you walk through you get deeper and deeper until they posts are towering over you.  The sun was starting to set as we walked around so it looked amazing with all the shadows.  Underneath the memorial there is a free museum all about the holocaust which we went into - it made me realise how shocking my history knowledge is though as I had no idea of the scale of the atrocities (both in terms of numbers and the spread across Europe).  It was very sad, but definitely worth a visit as it's a lovely memorial.

By now we were both feeling pretty shattered so just headed back to the hotel and went for dinner at the Italian restaurant next door (parma ham & rocket pizza for me, spaghetti carbonara for B).  We were then back in our room by about 7.30pm pretty much ready for bed....so rock and roll!

Next up will be my Day 2 diary featuring a trip to Berlin Zoo and some museums.

What's in My Suitcase

Thursday, 26 September 2013

I'm baaaack!  I had an amazing holiday taking in the sights of Berlin, Frankfurt & Amsterdam; eating sausages and sauerkraut served by men dressed in lederhosen, getting up close and personal with lions and elephants at the zoo, realising one of my lifes ambitions by exploring an abandoned theme park, living it up in first class on high speed trains across Germany, dodging ducks in a pedal boat, gawping at massive dinosaur fossils, and going on various bus & river tours.  We had the best time!

I'll be putting up a couple of posts later in the week with plenty of photos and more detail on what we got up to, but for now here's some videos I filmed before I left.  Warning, they are a bit rambly and the lighting isn't great - basically I filmed them in the evening as I was packing so there was no natural light and I was tired and slightly cranky...not my finest work, haha!  We only took hand luggage so I thought it might be interesting for you to see what I packed, as I know the prospect of packing one small bag for a 6 day holiday can be quite daunting so this might give you some tips.

Back Soon

Wednesday, 4 September 2013
Just a little note to say that I'm going to be taking a bit of a back seat from blogging this month.  Partly because I'm going on holiday in a few weeks time and I've got quite a lot of planning still to do for that so that's going to use up most of my free time.  Also the last two months have been really busy blog-wise with the July Daily Snap and August Big Five series' meaning I've posted a lot of content in the last 60 days, so I could do with a break!

I'll be back though, probably later in the month once I'm back from my holiday as I'll do some travel posts to fill you in on how we got on in Berlin, Frankfurt and Amsterdam (with plenty photos!).  I'm also planning on doing some vlogging on holiday so I'll hopefully have some videos for you at the end of September too.

In the meantime though, this will be the last post from me for the foreseeable.  See you on the flip side! :)

Pout Edinburgh

grow your own cocktail....really!

a cake push pop....who knew such a thing existed?

Carol Smillie
having a feel of Carol's pants....

Pout Edinburgh is an annual womens' lifestyle event held at the Corn Exchange featuring exhibitors from the world of beauty, fashion and more.  The best way to describe it is that it's like a wedding fair, although instead of florists, dressmakers and reception venues there are stands presenting cocktails, makeup, cupcakes, clothes, handbags, skincare etc.

Last week I headed along to a preview with Kirsty, Jade and Laura and we got a sneak peek of some of the brands who are going to be presenting this year including Cake-Cetera who had amazing cake pops for us to sample, shopping app Mallzee, Edinburgh based jewellery designers Lily-Mo, Darcey's with their gorgeous smelling soy candles (the strawberry and cream was to die for), landscape garden designer Mandy Bailey who had a "grow your own cocktail in a box" kit which we were all intrigued by, and a few others including our friends from Appointedd.

We were also excited to find out that Carol Smillie was there to talk about period pants on behalf of her new brand Diary Doll (yeah I know you're probably thinking "eh?!") - we were even invited to come and have a feel of her pants later....

The actual Pout event takes place later this month, on the 21st and 22nd of September.  Tickets are £15 if you book in advance, and £20 on the door.  Unfortunately I'll be on holiday in Berlin then so can't make it along this time, but I'll definitely try to go next year as it sounds like the ultimate girly day out!
