My Five Favourite FRIENDS Episodes

Friday, 23 August 2013
Next up in my Big Five series is my top 5 favourite Friends episodes. Before I started Cocktails & Daydreams I had another blog (which incidentally was named after a classic Friends quote - "We Were on a Break") which was going to be a collection of lists, and the main one I had in mind when I set the blog up was a list of my favourite Friends episodes. I had something in drafts for ages but just couldn't narrow it down past ~20 episodes and eventually I got bored of the blog before I had a chance to post it (the only 2 lists I did actually post were "Things that annoy me about people on the bus" and "My favourite Britney Spears singles").

A few years later here I am resurrecting that blog post idea, only this time I need to narrow my favourites down to just 5, and let me tell you this was HARD. Like REALLY hard. I absolutely love Friends, it is probably my favourite TV show of all time. I still watch an episode almost every day (thanks Comedy Central), I can pretty much recite all the lines off by heart, and I quite possibly know more about this show than I do about my actual job or the subject I have my degree in (in fact, I watched this Daily Mix Friends Quiz the other day and found myself getting genuinely angry at how rubbish they were - COME ON GUYS EVERYONE KNOWS IT'S REGINA PHALANGE, GOD!!).

Anyway I digress....

After much deliberation I have finally managed to narrow it down to my 5 all-time favourites (I've also included a few notable mentions at the end as I couldn't quite just pick 5!). These are in no particular order by the way because that would have made this task even harder, so let's get started...altogether now "I'll be there for youuuuuu".

S4E1 - The One With The Jellyfish

source - paramount comedy

This is the tailend of the trip to the beach and takes place after Ross and Rachel have kissed. Ross then falls asleep while trying to read Rachel's 18 page (FRONT AND BACK) letter and finds himself agreeing to an unknown stipulation of them getting back together.

The best bits:

The fallout after Rachel discovers Ross didn't finish the letter - "you fell ASLEEEEP??!"

The story of what happened when Monica got stung by a jellyfish - "that's right I stepped up! If I had to, I'd pee on any one of you".

S4E12 - The One With the Embryos

source - nymag

In this episode Phoebe starts the surrogacy process for her brother Frank Jr and his wife Alice.  Meanwhile the rest of the group take part in an epic "who knows who best" type quiz hosted by Ross, which results in the girls' losing their apartment.

The best bits:

The fateful question that loses Monica and Rachel their apartment...."ooh he's a....he's a.....TRANSPONSTER!!"  "THAT'S NOT EVEN A WOOOOOORD!".
Ross: "Which part of her body did Monica get a pencil stuck at age 14?"
Joey: Whispers
Ross: "EWWW NO!!  HER EAR!"

S5E11 - The One With All The Resolutions

source - paramount comedy

In this episode the group all make resolutions which they struggle to keep, like Chandler not making fun of people and Rachel not gossiping. Also in this episode Rachel finds out about Monica and Chandlers relationship.

The best bits:

Ross getting stuck in the leather pants in his dates' bathroom - slapping on body lotion and talc.

Phoebe teaching Joey how to play guitar

S10E3 - The One With Ross' Tan

source - paramount comedy

For me, the later Ross-centric episodes are the best and this one is probably the best one of the bunch. In this episode Ross ends up getting several spray tans after misjudging when to turn, due to him counting "mississippilly".

The best bits:

Ross' two tone tan - "what is up with Miss Hawaiian Tropic?!"

Phoebe and Monica's friend Amanda, played by Stiflers Mom from the American Pie franchise - "can you believe it, I've never had any formal DANCE training"

S3E2 - The One Where No One's Ready

source - friendsepisodeguide

This is the episode where everyone is going to an event at Ross' museum where he is giving a speech, and he is desperately trying to get them all dressed and ready to leave on time.

The best bits:

Joey and Chandlers petty fight over the armchair - "I'm Chandler, could I BE wearing any more clothes?!"

Monica accidentally leaving an outgoing message on her ex-boyfriend Richards' answering machine "...maybe I'm getting my period or something....NOOOOOOO!"

Some notable mentions:

S1E15 - The One with the Stoned Guy - one word : "vulva"
S2E14 - The One With The Prom Video - "he's her lobster!"
S5E9 - The One With Ross' Sandwich - "you threw my sandwich away....MY SANDWICH....MYYYY SAAANDWICH!"
S6E9 - The One Where Ross Got High - "I wasn't supposed to put beef in the trifle!"
S7E10 - The One With The Holiday Armadillo - Ross in an armadillo costume.  'Nuff said.

So there we have it, my five favourite Friends episodes (and a few extras...) - did your fave make the list?
