Five Colours in Her Hair

Thursday, 29 August 2013
As I'm sure I've mentioned before, over the years my hair has taken a lot of abuse and has been coloured pretty much every shade possible.  I actually did a whole post about my hair colour history about a year and a half ago but it was back when I only had a handful of followers so most of you probably haven't seen it, haha!

As part of my big five series I thought it was a good excuse to revisit the hair theme though, and luckily it worked out quite nicely as I have actually dyed my hair 5 different colours over the years!

Red

I had my first daliance with red hair back in high school when I used a box dye to colour my hair a burgandy red.  I don't have any photos from back then unfortunately, but I remember liking it at the time but looking back I think it probably washed me out as it was far too dark.  I've had other variations of red over the years, always achieved via at home dye kits.  If I could go back in time I definitely wouldn't do it again though as those dye jobs basically ruined my hair colour for years....when I decided to go blonde it took about a year of bleaching for the red tones to finally leave my hair!

you can't really tell, but on the far left I have red/purple streaks in my hair

Black

Ahhh look how pale this colour made me look...what was I thinking?!  This was from 2nd year of uni and again came courtesy of a box dye.  I loved it at the time, it was so shiny and I thought the black looked really cool (although with hindsight, I look like a wannabe goth!).  Never again.  Also, note how diverse my going out wardrobe was at this point - and the dark rimmed eye makeup, yeuch!

Brown

Whilst not as dark as the aforementioned black, I have also spent quite a long time as a brunette in the past with shades ranging from chocolate brown to the light brown that it is now.  I think the colour I have now is one of my favourite looks so far, I think it compliments my pale skin and blue eyes really well (it's probably also the closest to my natural colour...not that I can really remember what this is given that I've been dying my hair since I was about 15).  I also have a soft spot for my darker brunette days, although to be fair this looked best when I had a tan and I can't be arsed with fake tan these days!  B definitely prefers me as a brunette, but he doesn't really get a say in the matter....it's my hair, I'll dye it whatever colour I want....ha!

Blonde

I've spent most of the last 2 years as a blonde, starting with highlights and then eventually building up to a platinum white blonde.  I'm quite lucky in that being pale with blue eyes means I can get away with pretty much any blonde shade, as well as still suiting most brown colours.  It's funny, when I was really young I had bright blonde hair and it's like I've slowly gravitated back to my original colour over the years.  Looking back I think the ice white colour is a bit too harsh looking (I'm not Daenerys Targaryen....no matter how much I want to be) plus my hair was in such bad condition due to the bleach, but I love the more natural blonde looking shades like caramel/honey so that's probably what I will move back to at some point.

Purple

A bit of a random one to finish up!  This time last year I became obsessed with wanting grey/lilac hair (a la Ellie Goulding).  At that point my hair was at the white end of blonde so I thought it would be fairly easy to achieve a lilac/grey look with a dye job at the hairdressers but what I didn't realise was it would have to go pretty bright purple first before it faded to the shade I had in mind.  So I had a few weeks of crazy hair which went from blue to purple to lilac to grey.....I'm not sure where that bravery came from!!

  1. Aw that purple shade is gorgeous! I've had so many hair colours it's ridiculous, I'm naturally blonde too and for so long after dying it dark I wanted to be blonde again - but obviously as soon as it was blonde I wanted to be dark again! I've got the best of both worlds now with being brunette & blonde ombre! x

  2. This was such an interesting post. I've been brown, ginger, black, red, blue, purple and had blonde highlights! I really love the purple colour but I don't know if I'd have the patient to wait for it to fade.

    1. It fades really quickly if you wash it a lot so technically you could like wash your hair twice a day to get it grey faster, haha. x
