Wedding Outfit Recycling

Thursday, 30 August 2012
I went to a wedding recently where I wore a dress I'd worn to another wedding the previous year and just changed up the accessories.  It was a nice way to get a new look from an old dress so I thought I'd do a little outfit recycling post.

Normally I'm one of those people who likes to buy a new outfit for everything - so every time I go to a wedding or Christmas party etc I have to have something completely new.  I'd been searching in vain for ages trying to find a dress I liked for this wedding in June and eventually, 3 days before the big day, I decided to give up and just look in my wardrobe instead.

I'd worn this coral dress to my cousins' wedding in September 2011 and had been planning on selling it on eBay as I didn't think I'd wear it again (it's too fancy for day to day wear), but I still hadn't got round to putting it up so it was hiding out in the back of my wardrobe.

At the September wedding I'd worn it with a cream satin ribbon tied round my waist (from the haberdashery dept in John Lewis), a cream hair corsage from H&M pinned to the dress, cream wedges from Wallis, a cream beaded clutch from New Look, pearl jewellery  from Accessorize and a floral scarf from New Look as a shawl for when it got chilly outside.

To try and restyle the dress for the June wedding I added a black waist belt from Evans, a black trimmed lace cardigan from Primark, black feathered necklace from Primark, a cream & black gold chain handbag from Primark, and the same cream wedges as before.  All of these accessories I already owned, so I created the outfit completely from my existing wardrobe and didn't have to pay a penny (A Thrify Mrs would be proud!).

I think I managed to get two really nice wedding outfits from the same dress - and to top it off, I had got the coral dress in the sale in the first place (I think it was only about £20 from Dorothy Perkins - bargain!).  I'll definitely try to do this more often - I'm so bad for just going out and buying new clothes without looking at what I've got, and I'm sure I could save myself a lot of money if I just spent some time going through my wardrobe and mixing up outfits and accessories!
